Wildlife checking stations report early results for area

Andrea Meador
Register-Herald Reporter

The first day of buck season in southern West Virginia drew mixed reviews from wildlife checking stations surveyed Monday afternoon.

Stations in some counties reported a brisk start to the season, while others reported it as being average to slow.

Two stations in McDowell County reported what they believed were good numbers. Jimmy’s Hardware & Supply at Roderfield had checked in 42 bucks and Brewster’s Service Center at Cucumber had 40.

Early numbers in Raleigh County were somewhat lower. Cardinal Pawnbrokers reporting 15 check-ins in by late afternoon. Grandview Texaco reporting the same number of deer along with one bear.

A Hinton station, Angell’s Pump & Save said they had checked in an average 31.

Numbers were varied at the two Fayette stations surveyed. Shirley’s Market at Scarbro reported 15 deer taken, but Plum Orchard Lake had just one.

In Mercer County, with R&N in Bluefield reported 40 had been checked in, while in Princeton, H&S Sporting Goods had seen 21 bucks by late afternoon.

Numbers were a bit higher in Monroe County where A&J’s Market at Ballard had seen 89 and The Barn at Gap Mills was reporting 55 deer checked.

In Greenbrier County, the numbers were mixed with Rainelle J&J reporting 15 and Park Center Sporting Goods reporting twice that number at 30.

Hunters hitting the woods today will see weather similar to Monday — early morning temperatures in the high 30s with sunny skies and a high near 60 later in the day.
