Beckley police pursue 20 suspects in warrant sweep sweep

By Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

Beckley police pursued 20 people, most charged with a wide range of drug-related crimes, during a citywide warrant sweep Wednesday.

Detective Lt. Gant Montgomery said seven of the 20 suspects had been arrested by early Wednesday afternoon.

Police also executed search warrants at two suspects’ homes, Montgomery said. One was still under way as of early Wednesday afternoon, but officers had recovered prescription medication and three handguns.

Montgomery noted some of the people sought Wednesday have been wanted for some time, and another is an accused bank robber. Remington Alexander Wright, 20, whose last known address was 306 Neville St., Beckley, is charged with robbing the Neville Street Chase bank last Thursday.

Montgomery said police had received Crime Stoppers tips stating Wright was spotted near an apartment complex off Harper Road. They checked out the tip Thursday morning, but Wright was not found.

Arresting these suspects, Montgomery said, allows police to conclude investigations and help citizens who want illegal drugs out of their neighborhoods.

“Nobody wants a drug dealer living next door,” he said. “That attracts drug addicts and crime. It becomes a headache with cars in and out all night long. You’re not only dealing with the nuisance of someone selling drugs.

“This can bring the neighborhood back to the way it should be and make it a more peaceful place to live.”

Some of the suspects could eventually face federal charges, Montgomery noted.

These suspects were arrested as of early Wednesday afternoon. Their names, addresses and charges are as follows:

James Woody, 32, Quarry Street, Beckley; delivery of cocaine.

Kim McCombs, 30, Beckley; possession with intent to deliver cocaine base (crack cocaine) and possession of oxycodone and marijuana.

Sam Persinger, 22, Tanner Drive, Beckley; attempt to commit a felony.

John Jarrell, 45, F Street, Beckley; delivery of oxycodone, two counts.

Female juvenile; delivery of marijuana.

John Burnett, 36, Ninth Street, Beckley; delivery of cocaine, three counts, and conspiracy.

James Wiley, 20, Klaus Street, Beckley; delivery of marijuana.

These suspects remained at-large:

Remington Wright, 20, last known address 306 Neville St., Beckley; bank robbery.

Amy Hampton, 27, Eighth Street, Beckley; delivery of marijuana.

Rebecca Wilson, 47, Oak Hill; petit larceny of medication.
