Help sought with Christmas display

By Michelle James
Register-Herald Reporter

An Angel will be watching over the Town of Sophia this Christmas season.

When the town’s Christmas lights are lit during a ceremony next week, a new life-size Nativity scene as well as the newly purchased 13-foot angel will also be illuminated.

In an effort to assist the Sophia Area Christmas Spirit Committee, whose members are hard at work raising money to pay for the angel, Stotesbury Community Church Pastor Mark Hatfield has issued a challenge to all area churches.

“For several years now, all of the pastors and church members have been talking about keeping the Christmas Tree and nativity in town square, but they haven’t done anything about it but talk,” Hatfield said. “This is an opportunity to finally step up and make a difference.”

Hatfield and church deacon Tom Cox both say they hope to involve all area churches as Sophia’s Christmas display is meant to be enjoyed by more than just town residents.

“We’re just trying to keep the Christmas spirit alive and that’s what we’re asking other churches to do, too,” Cox said.

For more information, contact Hatfield at 304-683-9292, Billie Coleman at 304-573-0856 or the Town of Sophia at 304-683-4456.

The lights, as well as the angel, will be lit Nov. 28.
