Sophia Town Hall closed; no word on reason

More than one call was made to The Register-Herald regarding Sophia Town Hall being shut down for several days. The community has not been informed of why it has been closed, and citizens are complaining that they are unable to pay their water and sewage bills.

When a call was made to town hall, the male individual who answered the phone refused to give his name.

Asked why town hall has been closed, he said, “I will not comment to you on this subject,” and hung up the phone.

Sophia councilman John Fanary says he heard the state is doing an “audit” of the public office, but has not been officially informed of it.

“I heard state auditors were in auditing the books. I don’t know for sure, but that’s what I heard,” he said.

Fanary said he’s also received multiple calls of people asking him why their town hall is closed. If it’s being audited, he says it doesn’t justify the main doors being closed.

“People want to pay their water and sewer bills. I think the mayor owes the citizens an explanation,” Fanary said.
