Man’s death not suspicious, police say

The Register-Herald

Police say the death of a 65-year-old Sophia man found in his residence Monday morning after reports of a fire has not been ruled suspicious.

Raleigh County Sheriff’s Detective Jim Canaday said that according the state Medical Examiner’s office, Joseph Warner Sr. was not a victim of foul play, and his death has been ruled unattended.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, Canaday said, they discovered there was no fire. Warner’s body was found lying close to a floor heater, which caused the home to fill with smoke.

Warner, Canaday said, is believed to have passed away sometime over the weekend.

There is no official word on the cause of death, Canaday said.
