Authorities say an ATV rider wrecked and got lost during Burning Rock Off-Road Park’s grand opening Saturday.
Around 3 p.m. — shortly after Gov. Joe Manchin arrived for the official grand opening ceremony — a man believed to be in his early 20s apparently drove his ATV onto a dirt bike trail and rolled several times down a mountain, said Chief Danny Treadway of the Sophia Area Volunteer Fire Department.
The man, a member of the National Guard, called from a cell phone to report the wreck and that he was lost, Treadway said. After searching for an hour, crews found him unhurt on a Burning Rock trail near Riffe’s Branch.
As of early Saturday evening, crews were still working to retrieve the ATV, Treadway said.
