Phone outage persists in Greenbrier

By Tina Alvey
Register-Herald Reporter

An unknown number of Verizon telephone customers are still without service a week after an automobile crashed into a telephone pole near the state fairgrounds in Fairlea last Saturday.

“Our workers have been on site for the better part of the week repairing the damage,” Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell said Friday.

“We’re bringing customers back on service as we can.”

Both the pole and a large cable were destroyed in the accident, and several hundred customers, including some Ronceverte businesses, lost telephone service for varying amounts of time.

“This (repair work) is a very, very labor-intensive operation,” Mitchell said. “They’re replacing the cable and splicing individual wires.”

Mitchell said crews will continue to work into the weekend to complete the repairs and restore phone service to the households still affected by the outage.

“We think we have it on the run now,” Mitchell said. “We regret the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ patience.”
