The West Virginia Board of Education has recognized 62 schools in 28 counties as Exemplary Schools.
Mount Nebo Elementary School was the lone school in Nicholas County to receive the honor.
State board president Delores Cook stated that staff, parents, students and communities worked very hard to achieve the honor.
To achieve Exemplary status, a school must meet a high level of student proficiency in core subjects.
Schools must also have students meet an attendance level of or above 94 percent, a graduation rate of or above 85 percent, a college or post-secondary rate of 55 percent or more and at least 5 percent of students must complete advanced placement, dual credit and honors classes.
