Enrollment numbers up at some schools

Michelle James
Register-Herald Reporter

Although the numbers are expected to fluctuate, Raleigh County assistant schools superintendents Janet Lilly and Nelson Spencer told board members Tuesday that overall enrollment, as of the second week of school, was up at both the elementary and secondary level.

At the elementary school level, Lilly said, enrollment was up 173 students, with Daniels Elementary School experiencing the largest growth.

Daniels currently has 585 students, making it the largest elementary school in the county.

Every middle school except for Shady Spring saw an enrollment increase from 11 to 21 students. Shady, however, recorded nine fewer students than the second week in 2007.

Numbers increased at all of the high schools except Liberty, which recorded the same number of students as this time last year.

The numbers are expected to drop, however, since not all transfer requests have been received from students who have moved.

Also Tuesday, Larry Jessup, assistant business manager, updated board members on the Kronos time clock system, which allows all county employees to clock in electronically, eliminating the use of paper timecards.

Jessup said the automated system is working well, saving time and helping record hours more accurately.

The move to Kronos was originally brought about as a way to help the county operate in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Meanwhile, board members approved the suspension of Shady Spring High School assistant football coach Joe Keller.

No reason for the suspension was given.
