One dead, one hurt in Nicholas crash

Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

A Gilmer County man was killed and a passenger in his car was seriously injured in a collision at a Nicholas County intersection where authorities say the traffic lights were not working.

Frederick Nutter, 56, of Glenville, was pronounced dead following the accident Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 19 and W.Va. 129 in Mount Nebo, according to the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department. His passenger, Debra Ford, 52, of Davisville, was airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center, where she was in serious condition Thursday evening.

The accident was reported around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Chief Deputy Wayne Plummer said Nutter was driving a 2001 Ford Focus east on W.Va. 129 when his car collided with a 2001 Ford F-250 driven by Mark McClung, 57, of Mount Lookout. McClung was southbound on U.S. 19.

McClung was taken to Summersville Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, Plummer said.

Plummer said the intersection’s traffic lights were not working because of a sudden power outage in the Mount Nebo area. At the time of the accident, the state Division of Highways was at the scene and in the process of putting out caution signs.
