Meteorologists: Fay presents no flood danger

Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

Tropical Storm Fay may have deluged Florida, but meteorologists say the storm’s remnants will only soak southern West Virginia.

Fay’s remnants have been hanging around southern West Virginia since Tuesday and will linger today, said Chris Leonardi, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Forecasters believed the storm would not be a flooding threat before it arrived and it ended up being even less of a problem.

“There was no flooding concern, even with what we expected,” Leonardi said.

“We initially expected 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, and we would need 3 to 4 inches for flooding.

“It’s only been enough to generate some rain, really.”

The Beckley area had received a half inch of rain since the remnants arrived, Leonardi said, and it will likely only experience scattered showers today. No rainfall between Aug. 16 and 24 dried the ground, even after the 3-inch rainfall and flooding of Aug. 13.

After the Fay remnants leave, a weak cold front will arrive Friday, Leonardi said.

Afterward, the area will experience a long stretch of dry, warm weather.

“Right now, you have a holiday weekend coming,” he said. “Get out and enjoy the weekend.

“There’s nothing to worry about in the foreseeable future.”
