A golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 15 at Grandview Country Club that will raise funds for Newspapers in Education (NIE), a literacy program operated by The Register-Herald.
Lewis Chevrolet is sponsoring a hole-in-one challenge during the tournament. If anyone aces an as yet to be designated par 3, he or she will win a 2008 Chevy Cobalt courtesy of the local dealership.
Lewis’ Sarah Abrams applauded the NIE program and hopes to continue cooperation on these programs between the dealership and The Register-Herald.
“We have worked side by side with the newspaper for many years on many programs,” Abrams said. “The NIE program is a great cause, and we are happy to be involved with this tournament.”
According to Register-Herald sales and marketing manager Carla Nelson, the golf tournament will be used as a great fundraiser for NIE.
“All the money raised will go toward the program and funding newspapers for area schools,” Nelson said.
One NIE supporter is retired teacher Butch Freeman, who has been working with Nelson to get the tournament organized for a second year.
"I have been trying to get it organized, from tournament set-up to prizes,” Freeman explained. “I helped with the tournament last year and really enjoyed it. Carla did a really good job advertising and getting this all together.”
Check-in for the tourney is at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Door prizes, gift bags, raffles and other surprises are in the offing, Nelson said.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Chick-fil-A, which is also a major sponsor of the event.
NIE is funded by generous support from numerous businesses around the community. Its aim is two-fold — to provide newspapers to local schools and help curb the illiteracy problem affecting the country.
