New issue of W.Va. South holds breathtaking views

The August-September issue of West Virginia South magazine is on newsstands throughout the region.

“This is one of our favorite covers of all time,” West Virginia South editor Audrey Stanton said. “It features an authentic, restored WWII biplane in the skies near the beautiful New River Gorge Bridge.”

Just how the magazine got the photo is as interesting as the story about the local pilot that accompanies it.

“Staff photographer Brian Ferguson actually went up alongside the biplane in another small plane,” Stanton said. “The pictures he took from that vantage point could not have been better. They’re breathtaking.”

In fact, Stanton said, the issue is full of southern West Virginia views from various vantage points. Ben Curnett describes the view from the biplane over the gorge while Tim Wimer describes it from a Midland Trail motorcycle ride, for instance. Ed Rehbein’s photos and articles depict the Gauley area on foot, and Bruce Ingram sees part of Fayette County from a treetop zip line.

“It’s really an adventure-packed issue,” Stanton said. “But as always, we’ve provided something for everyone.”

Readers will also discover information about the state’s Becoming an Outdoorswoman organization, a local group of mounted shooting cowboys, a Greenbrier County outdoor drama, a Monroe County doll-maker, a Grandview quilt-maker, the upcoming Appalachian Festival, small businesses, a Beckley restaurant and much more.

Stanton did point out a post-press clarification: Dates for the open houses scheduled at the Village Shoppe and Bistro are Sept. 11 and 12 for a fall open house and Oct. 16 and 17 for a Christmas open house. The dates listed in the magazine changed after it went to press.
