Beckley man gets more time in jail for perjury

A Beckley man currently serving five to 25 years for his role in a series of beatings in late 2003 and early 2004 had an additional two to 20 years added to his time after pleading guilty to two counts of perjury.

Darrell Cadle Jr., 30, originally pleaded guilty in 2004 to two counts of malicious wounding and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. He received one to 10 years on each of the malicious wounding pleas and a one to five year sentence on the conspiracy plea.

Prosecutors claimed Cadle committed perjury on three different occasions when testifying in the trial of his co-defendant Shawn Stewart, 28, of Burnsville.

“I apologize,” Cadle told Raleigh County Circuit Judge Robert Burnside during Friday’s sentencing hearing. “At the time I felt that I was helping a friend.”

Burnside called Cadle’s actions an “attack on the court system.”

“The integrity of the court depends on witnesses telling the truth,” he said. “You took an oath and promised to tell the truth, but you lied. You attacked the court system itself.”

Burnside said Cadle didn’t appear sorry or remorseful for his crimes.

“I don’t detect a lot of remorse or sorrow for what you did,” he said. “The court must make it very clear that lying can’t be tolerated.”

Burnside then sentenced Cadle to one to 10 years on each of the two perjury counts and said they must be served consecutively with the sentences he is now serving.

“When you begin serving the two additional years in jail you might think about the fact that you could have been out if you had not lied in court,” the judge said.
