College may gain use of indoor pool in Greenbrier County

DOH pool could be used if details are worked out

LEWISBURG — A functioning indoor Greenbrier County swimming pool could soon become a reality.

Division of Highways District 9 Engineer Steve Cole met Friday with representatives from New River Community and Technical College, County Commission president Lowell Rose and Delegate Tom Campbell to discuss the unused indoor pool inside Lewisburg’s DOH building.

The pool, located next to NRCTC’s Lewisburg campus, has not been used for some time and its accompanying locker and restrooms have all been converted into office space, Cole said Monday.

However, if college and county officials could “work out the details,” the offices could be converted back and the pool could be used again, Cole said.

Previously, Campbell, D-Greenbrier, told county commissioners that about $85,000 would be needed “to restore the filtration system and other needed repairs to make this pool operational again.”

The county’s lone indoor pool is located at The Greenbrier.

Although a specific timetable has not been given, Campbell said a new District 9 building is being planned for construction.

For now, District 9 employees continue to work from their old building, but Campbell said DOH officials have agreed to “vacate all areas” needed for reopening the pool by July 31.

County officials said a third party would be needed to operate the pool.
