Lincoln man charged in gas drive-off

Mary Catherine Brooks
Wyoming County Bureau Chief

PINEVILLE — Shawn Anthony Greathouse, 31, of Lincoln County was charged in connection with a “gas drive-off” in Mullens.

Greathouse obtained about $49 of gas from Winfrey’s Exxon, then told the owner he did not have the money. Greathouse fled the scene, with Jim Winfrey, the station owner, in pursuit, according to Mullens Police Chief Ray Toler.

Toler and Sgt. Meadows tried to catch up with Winfrey, but had two prisoners from another incident in the vehicle.

Wyoming County Sheriff’s Lt. J. White also responded and arrested Greathouse when his car broke down near McGraws.

He was charged with driving with a revoked license, improper registration, no insurance, and petit larceny, according to Toler. Greathouse’s bond was set at $5,000.

In the police car were Heather Austin and her husband, Joshua L. Austin.

Heather Austin was charged with leaving the scene of an accident Sunday night, Toler said. Reportedly she hit another vehicle, had no insurance, and fled the scene. Her bond was set at $2,500 cash.

Joshua Austin was charged with bond violation, Toler said.

Both Austins remained in jail Wednesday evening.
