Greenbrier board agrees on $400,000 expenditure

Tina Alvey
Register-Herald Reporter

LEWISBURG — The Greenbrier County Board of Education agreed Tuesday evening to spend just over $400,000 and bank $33 million.

The millions in public school bond proceeds will be deposited with BB&T for six months, drawing .95 percent interest, upon the recommendation of treasurer David McClure. Bond-funded school construction projects around the county are still in the design stage, and this short-term investment allows the board to earn several thousand dollars while waiting for the appropriate time to spend the principal, Superintendent John Curry explained.

Among the projects on the drawing board are new Lewisburg and Rainelle elementary schools, an extensive renovation of Greenbrier West High School, construction of an auxiliary gymnasium at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School and renovations at Smoot Elementary.

Curry unveiled artists’ concepts and working architectural drawings of the major projects during Tuesday’s board meeting, noting parents, teachers, students and administrators have all been involved in the design process.
