Camp-4-Kids fund still in need of help

By Michelle James
Register-Herald Reporter

Donations are still being accepted for The Salvation Army and The Register-Herald’s Camp-4-Kids fund, which, as of June 5, had raised $9,164.

Money raised for the fund, which is in its third year, sends area children to Camp Tomahawk, a 172-acre residential camp situated in the hills of Berkeley County in the Eastern Panhandle.

Children who attend the week-long camp will participate in a variety of activities, including nature study, arts and crafts, canoeing and paddleboating, swimming, soccer, basketball, baseball, biking, hiking and archery.

As it did last year, money raised for the fund will be matched up to $20,000 by an anonymous donor.

Salvation Army Capt. Bob Cornett says the goal of the fund is to raise $20,000, which would, with the match, be bumped up to $40,000.

Although the fund is currently close to $11,000 shy of its goal, Cornett says he is pleased with the money raised to date.

“I’m excited, considering the times,” he said. “The times are rough and people are trying to figure out how to put gas in their car, let alone how to help send a child to camp.”

Cornett says the money raised will not only help send children to Camp Tomahawk but will also allow approximately 25 to 30 local children attend The Salvation Army’s Keeping Kids Off the Streets summer day camp.

The day camp provides children a safe place to learn and play and also ensures they are fed.

Donations of any amount are accepted. Cornett says every penny makes a difference.

“A dollar can make a big difference,” he said.
