One inmate captured in Cabell County

By Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

Cabell County sheriff’s deputies caught one of three escaped Mount Olive Correctional Complex inmates Monday afternoon, but two remain at-large.

Brandon Williams, 23, of either Logan, Cabell or Mingo counties, was captured around 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to information from Jim Rubenstein, commissioner for the state Division of Corrections, and the Cabell County 911 center. Williams was arrested at a BP station in Guyandotte. Williams is back in DOC custody, and he was being questioned Monday night.

Rubenstein said Williams tried to flee when officers arrived and reportedly tried to stop a motorist. However, Rubenstein said he did not have many details of Williams’ capture and could not confirm other media reports.

Williams is serving a one-to-10-year sentence for grand larceny.

Two other Mount Olive minimum security camp inmates from last Thursday’s escape remain at-large: Robert Cole, 27, of Ohio County; and Nicholas Lane, 28, of Cabell County. Cole was serving one to 15 years in prison for manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance, and Lane was serving two to 14 years for wanton endangerment and breaking and entering.

All three men fled when their work crew stopped at the state Division of Highways office in Beckley for lunch.

Sunday, Rubenstein said authorities believed the three were still hiding in the Bradley area, where one was reportedly seen Friday. However, there have been no sightings since. Various law enforcement agencies continue the manhunt for the remaining two inmates.

The inmates have either already seen the parole board or were scheduled to see the parole board within a short time, Rubenstein noted. Now, they face a felony escape charge.

All of the inmates were in a minimum security area of the prison, and inmates with a violent history are not allowed on work crews. But Rubenstein urged citizens to “use caution” if they believe they have spotted Cole or Lane.

Cole is described as a white man, with brown hair and eyes. He is 5-foot-10 and 174 pounds. He has several tattoos, including a winged woman on his left front upper arm and a tiger’s head on his right front upper arm.

Lane is a white man with brown hair and hazel eyes who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 190 pounds. He has a one-inch scar on his left elbow and a tattoo of Native American feathers on his front left upper arm and three stars and barbed wire on his left wrist.

Those with information about the inmates’ whereabouts are urged to call the State Police at 304-256-6700.
