The final precinct reporting in the Democratic race for the state Senate’s 10th District confirmed Wednesday’s Register-Herald report that James W. “Jim” McNeely was victorious over Anita Skeens Caldwell.
The district is composed of the southern and eastern portion of Mercer County, all of Greenbrier, Monroe and Summers counties and the eastern portion of Fayette County. All but one of the 109 precincts had reported as of Tuesday night’s press time.
Final yet unofficial numbers available early Wednesday showed McNeely as the winner with 52 percent of the vote (10,246 votes) to Caldwell’s 48 percent, or 9,328 votes.
By county, Caldwell was victorious in Fayette and Mercer counties. McNeely secured the majority of votes in Summers, Greenbrier and Monroe counties.
If confirmed by canvass, McNeely will face Republican incumbent Don Caruth in November for the district’s only open seat. Caruth ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Late results in the 28th House of Delegates district also confirmed Register-Herald reports that incumbent Thomas W. Campbell and Joan C. Browning will go up against incumbent Republican Delegate Ray Canterbury in November, when the three will compete for two seats.
“I was thrilled with the support and also what appeared to be a very big turnout around the county,” Campbell said, adding he looks forward to November.
Final yet unofficial numbers showed Campbell on top of the race with 49 percent of the vote (5,420 votes). Browning followed with 3,332 votes, or 30 percent.
A third candidate, Paul Detch, finished the night with 2,393 votes, or 21 percent.
