Campbell, Browning lead in House 28th

Audrey Stanton
Register-Herald Features Ediotr

Unofficial results Tuesday night showed incumbent Delegate Thomas W. Campbell and Joan C. Browning in the top two Democratic positions for the House of Delegates 28th District, with 30 of 36 precincts reporting at midnight.

The 28th District represents Greenbrier County.

If they maintain their leads and are confirmed by canvass, the two will go up against incumbent Republican Delegate Ray Canterbury in November, when the three will compete for two seats.

Campbell was showing 4,496 votes (or 48 percent). Browning trailed with 2,785 votes (or 30 percent).

Challenger Paul S. Detch, a Lewisburg attorney, had 1,993 votes (or 21 percent).

Campbell has represented Greenbrier County in the House for the last 12 years, serving as chair of the House Select committees on PEIA and senior issues. He has also served on the House Finance Committee and as vice chair of the Education Subcommittee.

As such, he has advocated improved funding for the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging and educational endeavors including Greenbrier County Schools, New River Community and Technical College and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Browning, who was defeated by only two votes during her first go at a House seat, is known for her involvement with the southern civil rights movement, as well as her work as a writer, researcher and fundraiser involved with education, libraries, first responders and seniors throughout the state.

In 2007, she was honored with the Governor’s Service Award for Lifetime Achievement.
