Civil war re-enactment to be part of Battle of Lewisburg

The Register-Herald

LEWISBURG A full schedule of events is on tap for the annual Battle of Lewisburg May 16-18.

This year’s “living history” theme will be “the black experience during the war,” said Ross Weisiger, a coordinator for the three-day event.

“For the first time, we have broken new ground by showcasing the lives of black people during the Civil War,” Weisiger said.

This year’s events include re-enactments of Frederick Douglass at John Wesley Methodist Church on at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at New River Technical and Community College.

There will be a ladies tea with Elizabeth Keckly at the General Lewis Inn at 2 p.m. Saturday and a presentation of black freemasonry at NRCTC at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

Also on Sunday, there will be a re-enactment of the first White House meeting of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass at noon at NRCTC.

Throughout the weekend on the grounds of the NRCTC a Civil War camp will be available to walk through

The highlight of the weekend will be the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Lewisburg at 2 p.m. on Washington Street.
