Health officials in Raleigh and Greenbrier counties each reported a new case of rabies this week.
The Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department reported a raccoon found in the New River Road area near the Summers County line tested positive for rabies on Friday.
Wednesday, Greenbrier health officials reported a rabid skunk attacked an unvaccinated dog in the Organ Cave area.
Health officials said the dog will require euthanization. This is the fourth confirmed case of rabies in the Ronceverte area this year.
Two area dogs are currently being quarantined after being exposed to a skunk and possum that may have had rabies earlier this year.
Health officials are reminding the public to keep their pets’ vaccinations updated and to be on the lookout for symptoms of rabies, which include increased drooling or saliva, aggressive behavior, difficulty in swallowing and walking, and paralysis.
Parents are encouraged to teach their children not to play with any stray or wild animals.
