Several Raleigh County schools were recognized last Friday by the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce for their performance on WESTEST exams.
The chamber held the first Linda Daniel School Data Excellence Award Luncheon in honor of the late Linda Daniel at the Raleigh County Convention Center to honor the “best overall” and “most improved” schools in the county.
Linda Daniel served on the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce Education Affairs Committee and also served as the School to Work coordinator for Raleigh County Schools.
Her daughter Alyssa Daniel and sister Debbie Bewgus attended the luncheon.
“She was such an important part of the committee and chamber, we couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated individual,” said Ellen Taylor, president and CEO of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce.
“This was a great opportunity to recognize her for her contributions,” she said.
The chamber analyzed the WESTEST scores of every elementary, middle and high school in Raleigh County.
First place awards in the “Most Improved Overall” division went to Maxwell Hill Elementary School, Park Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High School.
In the “Best Scores Overall” division, the first place award went to Maxwell Hill Elementary, Shady Spring Middle and Liberty High School.
Winners were given gift certificates to BJW Printing in Beckley.
“Schools are always short on office supplies, so we thought this was a way to recognize them and give the business community an opportunity to say thanks for a job well done,” Taylor said.
The chamber’s Education Affairs Committee received donations from local business sponsors including: Appalachian Bible College, Beckley Newspapers Inc., BJW Printing and Office Supplies, BB&T, Century 21, Chick-fil-A, Citizen Conservation Corps of West Virginia, City National Bank, Gil De La Rosa Insurance, The Resort at Glade Springs, Highland Towers, Larry Ford Insurance, Mountain State University, Raleigh County Memorial Airport, Raleigh General Hospital, TSG Consulting and United Bank.
