A warm, dry and windy day left Raleigh County firefighters battling numerous brush fires, according to authorities.
Six brush fires were reported to the county’s emergency operations center between 4 and 9 p.m. Saturday. As of 9 p.m., two fires — on Old Bryson Road in Lester and Flatwoods Road in Abraham — were still burning.
EOC dispatchers were unaware of anyone being injured or any structures being in danger.
Four other brush fires were reported earlier in the afternoon. They were located at Iowa Street in Lester, Neville Street in Beckley, off W.Va. 54 in Hotchkiss and off Robert C. Byrd Drive near the Beckley VA Medical Center.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Beckley reached 69 degrees Saturday with humidity dropping to 22 percent by 3 p.m. Wind speeds reached 23 mph.
