Nicholas firefighters honored by Senate

— Two Nicholas County firefighters who perished while battling a blaze last month were honored Thursday by the West Virginia Senate.
Firefighters Johnnie Hammons and Timothy Nicholas were trapped when the roof of a mobile home caved in Feb. 20 near Craigsville.
“Their passing not only brought to mind the dangerous profession of firefighting, but also the dedication and commitment to community service of volunteer firefighters,” SR44 said.
The resolution was sponsored by Sens. Randy White, D-Webster, Bill Laird, D-Fayette, Larry Edgell, D-Wetzel, Robert Plymale, D-Wayne, John Unger, D-Berkeley, Jeffrey Kessler, D-Marshall, Ron Stollings, D-Boone, Erik Wells, D-Kanawha, and Bob Williams, D-Taylor.
Firefighting is described in the resolution as “a dangerous profession that takes the lives of nearly 100 firefighters nationally each year.”
The resolution also applauded all firefighters for placing themselves “in harm’s way for the safety and welfare of our communities in West Virginia.”
