A 24-year-old Beckley man was given probation Tuesday in Raleigh County Circuit Court.
Judge Robert Burnside sentenced Christopher Parker to one to five years for manufacturing marijuana, to run consecutively with a one-year sentence for fleeing. Parker also received one year for receiving stolen property, to run concurrently.
The sentences were suspended and Parker will serve 18 months’ probation.
Parker pleaded guilty to the offenses Monday, but Burnside held off on sentencing until Tuesday afternoon, allowing assistant prosecutor Tom Truman to explain why the state was recommending probation instead of jail time.
Truman, who was not present when Parker pleaded, told Burnside that compared to “most of the folks we deal with,” Parker had no prior criminal record.
