Fire officials say they’re not sure what caused a structure fire at the old Mount View Elementary School in Rock Creek Friday morning.
According to Whitesville assistant chief David Hodges, the fire was confined to the basement when his department arrived on the scene around 1:30 a.m.
Officials say the fire could have been disastrous; however, Whitesville’s quick response and attack was credited for keeping the large blaze from spreading to the upper floors of the school.
The former elementary school had been converted into a single-family residence and was occupied at the time of the fire.
Whitesville, Coal River, Trap Hill and Lester Volunteer Fire Departments spent more than three hours on the scene.
No injuries were reported.
