A structure fire destroyed a trailer on Gillimore Street in Helen Saturday evening, injuring two of its residents, and briefly rekindled Sunday afternoon before being extinguished by firefighters, Rhodell Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Rick Huff explained Sunday.
According to Huff, the trailer was fully engulfed — with flames shooting 20 feet into the air — when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday.
Although details were sketchy, Huff noted that the male victim suffered from smoke inhalation while the female victim had burns on her arm. The man has been released from the hospital, but Huff was uncertain as to the woman’s status.
Firefighters responded from Rhodell, Sophia and Sophia Area, said Huff. No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. He described the residence as a “total loss.”
The fire briefly rekindled Sunday afternoon before being put out quickly by firefighters.
Huff did not comment as to any possible causes of the fire and said the case has been turned over to the state Fire Marshal’s office.
