Rock House to host fundraiser for Lady D

Michael Greenway, owner of Rock House Java & Gelato in Beckley, says he was thrilled to hear that Lady D, West Virginia’s first lady of soul, had won the President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural song contest with “Go Higher.”

“It’s something all West Virginians should be proud of,” he said.

Lady D (Doris Fields) will perform her song at an inaugural ball. She was honored by Gov. Joe Manchin Wednesday in Charleston with a Certificate of Achievement.

Greenway says he didn’t realize the extent of the expenses associated with Lady D’s trip to Washington, D.C., for Obama’s inauguration.

“She has to rent a place to stay and all the other expenses associated with an out-of-state trip,” he said.

Today from 7 to 9 p.m., Rock House Java & Gelato is hosting a fundraising concert featuring Lady D.

“She will sing some songs and we will have all the food, drinks and coffee available that we normally have,” Greenway said. “We’re hoping she can get some generous donations to help her with those expenses.”
