Tracks at a Greenbrier County train derailment site have been repaired, but no cause for last Friday’s accident has been determined, according to a railroad official.
CSX spokesman Gary Sease said Monday a second track remained open during the repairs, therefore keeping the flow of passenger and freight trains moving through the derailment area.
Two locomotives were pulling 150 loaded coal cars from Boone County to a port terminal in Newport News, Va., Friday afternoon, Sease said. Shortly before 6 p.m., four cars derailed, and three went over an embankment near Teaberry Road in Ronceverte.
Now that the track has been repaired, Sease said CSX’s focus is determining the still-unknown cause of the accident, according to Sease. Those investigating the accident are examining both data and evidence collected.
He noted CSX keeps a database on all issues that have caused derailments, which is used to prevent future accidents.
