Meadow Bridge is among best schools
In response to the letter from Dr. Dangerfield advocating the closure of Meadow Bridge High School, I have a few thoughts to share.
Although you never stated the reason you believe the closure would make Fayetteville a better school, I believe you are implying that the dollar savings would be funneled to your school and that would translate into making your students smarter. Research indicates otherwise.
I wonder what Dr. Dangerfield would think about busing the Fayetteville students to Meadow Bridge? Doesn’t that make more sense? Our school has better test scores, better graduation rates, better attendance, etc.
Since you can’t deny these things, I anticipate that your response would be that it’s too far to bus students over here.
When talking about why MBHS is being excluded from the consolidation plan you have the nerve to say “because a bunch of community members packed up and drove to a meeting in Romney to plead their case.” You ever stop to think that maybe that “bunch of community members” that care about our school has something to do with MBHS being the best in the county?
Donations sought for Woodrow hoops display
Beckley is known as the City of Champions, so help us to display their photos at the Convention Center with your donation.
The local convention center (armory) has photos of some of Woodrow Wilson’s State Basketball Champions hanging, but only those of Coach Dave Barksdale and Coach Ron Kidd.
Coach Barksdale’s were ’90, ’92, ’93, ’97, ’98 and Coach Kidd’s were ’08, ’09. None of Coach Jerome VanMeter’s or Coach Preach Wiseman’s are on display. VanMeter’s were ’46, ’51, ’52, ’53, ’54, ’57 and Wiseman’s were ’62, ’65, ’67.
The committee I am working with is trying to get donations to have those missing photos hung.
We have been working on this for a while, but are only about halfway there.
The photos cost about $600 per photo to frame and hang.
Those on the committee working with me are Paul Hutchinson, Ralph Beckett and Jim Bryson.
I really think it is a shame that VanMeter and Wiseman are not recognized in the convention center.
Woodrow Wilson has 16 state basketball championships, and the closest to them are Northfork and Wheeling Central with 10.
If any of your classmates would like to donate, they can make out a check to Woodrow Wilson Basketball Championships, in care of William Turner, United Bank, 129 Main St., Beckley WV 25801.
