I agree 100 percent with Sheriff Tanner

I have been reading all of the articles about the statements made by Sheriff Tanner and just sitting back. But I have to speak up. In my opinion he is one of the finest people in our county.

On April 5, 2004, my son, my only child, Jonathan Cody Daniel, took my dad’s deer rifle and committed suicide in my parents’ back yard. My parents and I were devastated, of course.

Never have I seen anyone take so much pain to calm my mother down as Mr. Tanner did. When a friend, Larry McNeely, came to my home and took me to my parents, Mr. Tanner was kneeling down in front of my mother talking to her and my dad. He was wonderful, so calm and caring. I was so glad that he was there as my sisters were in Nashville to watch our cousin, Jennifer Hicks, perform on Nashville Star and my ex was gone to Ohio.

My brother-in-law and I and my 6-year-old grandson were the only ones there. I saw that Mr. Tanner had my parents in hand and was able to go comfort my grandson.

To be honest, most of that day is a blur to me. But the true care that Steve Tanner took with my aged parents was visible to everyone there. All of my cousins and friends who came to comfort us later told me that they had never seen such a caring law officer. But then he was raised by a truly fine couple. I had met his father several times before and I also had the great pleasure of meeting his lovely mother when she got a pet goat off of me.

But to get back to everyone who takes offense at his statement on gun control, I heartily agree with him 100 percent. Guns don’t kill people after all; bad people use guns to kill people.
