Be aware of Social Security identity theft
I am contacting you to notify you of an instance of identity theft which is thriving in the Social Security world.
Today I spent a great deal of time trying to regain my mother’s after we discovered hers had been stolen and new banking information had been added to her new “online” account.
The first alert was receiving a letter from Social Security thanking us for completing the online process in my mother’s name.
My mother is 92 and has very poor vision from macular degeneration and is not Internet savvy.
The letter from SSA contained this statement, “if you did not complete this online account, please let us know.”
Hopefully this letter can alert others to this same issue.
Everyone at SSA was wonderful and we had excellent customer service from everyone we talked to.
My suggestion is to contact SSA and make sure your information is secure. The Office of Inspector General is already at work on this case. Go get those bad guys OIG.
