The Register-Herald

— The second annual ‘It’s Your World, Go for the Green’ 10k - 5k Race & Festival & 5k Walk took place April 21 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex. The event is co-sponsored by the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority and Sam’s Club.

Money generated from race registration benefits the School Recycling Program; and Sam’s Club generates funding via Cow Chip Bingo sponsorships, which support the Children’s Miracle Network.

A very special thank you to JK and Marilyn Allen (Grandview Shell Station) for their contribution of the cows for Cow Chip Bingo. Without these cows, there would not have been any Bingo!

Thank you, runners and walkers, for participating in our event, which in turn benefits great causes. The newly added 5k Race and 5k Walk were very well received by all. A heart-felt thank you to David and Cyndie Chinn with Beckley Crossfit and Dr. Daniel Foley, Foley Orthodontics, for sponsoring the incredible prize monies for the races.

Also new this year was the Grade School Cross Country Fun Run for grades K-5.  Hundreds watched as grade schoolers took part in their very own races. Every student running received a bib and upon crossing the finish line received a ribbon. Hollywood Elementary took home the trophy for the most participation of any grade school in the county.

An event of this magnitude involves a collaborative effort from several associates. For many weeks before the race, the planning committee met frequently ironing out specifics. A debt of gratitude to all serving on the planning committee for all their hard work: Jeremiah Johnson, membership marketing lead, CMN Coordinator Sam’s Club; Professor Lori Pace, Concord University, Erma Byrd Higher Education Center; cross country coach George Barbera, State Farm Insurance; Capt. Eric Rogers, Beckley Police Department; Susan Richmond, WVU Extension and Raleigh County 4-H; Lacy Treadway, Ms. Lacy Face Painting & Fairy Parties;

Matt Huffman and Kara Van Pelt, Beckley Sanitary Board; Ryan Gilkerson, YMCA; Tonya Patton, RCSWA educator; Steve Garrett, RCSWA ‘Curby’; James Allen, RCSWA executive director.

A special thank you to the following for their involvement in making the Race & Festival successful: Jay Cantley, PE, Gates Engineering; Allen Reid, West Virginia Division of Highways; John Rist, Rist, Higgins & Associates; Thomas Treadway, 2013 Earth Day T-shirt design; Larry Foster, Spartan Sporting Goods; Earl Ferguson, Graphic Artist Spartan Sporting Goods; Marley Holliday, National Anthem vocalist.

Festival vendors; YMCA Soccer Complex staff; Bailey Pace and Mr. Jesse (J) Pace; Concord University Fun Zone; Concord University volunteer students: flaggers, race results, registration and vendor setup; David Hunter and Willie Barbera, race results; The Register-Herald; Southern Communications; Weisenbach Recycled Products; Trophy Showcase; iplayoutside .com; roadid.com
