Davis’ death a tragic loss for readers

I just wanted to let you know how very sorry I am upon hearing of Bev Davis’ passing. Truly a tragic loss for all of us who read The Register-Herald. Bev is a “cannot ever be replaced” resource to be missed and mourned by all of us.

My condolences to all of you privileged to work with Bev these many years.

Whipple store is a diamond in the rough

After an absence of too many years, I recently returned to the wonderful beauty of New River rafting. A treat indeed. I also took time to tour the Whipple Company Store. I had stumbled into another treasure.

As a board member for the West Virginia Labor History Association and editor of a book on West Virginia history, I thought I knew a bit about life in the coal camps. I was right. I knew a bit.

The Whipple Company Store opened my eyes to realities that no historian has even imagined. I encourage you and other “locals” to tour the store and inquire regarding the price of shoes.

Raft guides can restock their tool boxes of tales to tell on the flat water.

Your have a true diamond in the rough in the Whipple Company Store. Please encourage folks to take a look.

Thanks to firefighters for fundraiser efforts

The Muscular Dystrophy Association would like to thank the Beckley firefighters for their hard work and dedication in raising money through the Fill-the-Boot campaign.

Over the last three years, the firefighters have raised over $7,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This money has been used to provide services for over 1,000 West Virginians living with Neuromuscular Diseases. These services include a fully funded multidisciplinary clinic at West Virginia University Medical Center, medical equipment through our loan closet program, support groups and summer camp for children ages 6-17. The Muscular Dystrophy Association of West Virginia could not provide these  services without the help and support of our firefighters. We would like to thank  Beckley for proclaiming September 2010 as Beckley Firefighter Appreciation Month. With the support of the firefighters and citizens, we can continue to provide help for today and hope for tomorrow.
