Proud of Greenbrier West football team

Proud Cavalier fans would like to take a moment to congratulate the Greenbrier West High School football team in its Class A State Championship game against Madonna High School.

The Cavs played their hearts out Saturday night, falling short in a heartbreaking loss.  They played like champions, and that’s exactly how we fans think of them.

We know these humble players feel that they have let down their school and community, but that could not be further from the truth. Speaking as a fan, we are all very, very proud of our team, and so grateful that they allowed us to tag along on their wonderful season.

The journey began on a steamy August night in Summersville, and concluded on a frozen island in Wheeling.  Along the way there were overwhelming victories, courageous efforts, a single stumble against a tough and gritty Summers County foe, and repeated spankings of higher-favored teams as they battled through the playoffs.

Through these short few months, we fans were able to share in their triumphs from packed bleachers at fields in Charmco and across the state. We reveled in the rumble of the Harley as our team took the field, in the roar of the crowd as we drove to another score, in the thunderous clash as the defense smothered another opponent, and in the cheers from the fans lining Route 60 as the buses left for the State Championship.

You young men have not disappointed us, you have inspired us. You have not failed your community, but instilled in it a pride that cannot be measured. To all of the players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, parents and fans: We salute you!  This season will never be forgotten.

A Cavalier fan,

Terry Montgomery
