The Second Amendment to the Constitution reads: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

The Second Amendment was passed to give the citizens of the United States the ability to stand up to a tyrannical government that oversteps its bounds. The framers of the Constitution and writers of the Bill of Rights were well acquainted with such governments for they had just won their independence from such tyranny (note that they owned guns).

When you surrender one freedom you put other freedoms in jeopardy. You’ve heard the cliché, “Give them an inch; they’ll take a mile.” Perhaps we could reword it this way: “You give them another term in office, without keeping them accountable, they’ll take your health care, hard-earned money, guns and any other freedom they want.”

I recently heard a newscaster ask why a hunter would need an assault rifle with a 30-round magazine (this is the go-to argument for the anti-gun advocates). What they do not seem to understand is that I have the legal right to own a gun with a high capacity magazine regardless of whether some politician thinks I need it.

When we surrender one right, we put even more rights in jeopardy. In West Virginia, you still have the right to own firearms, but for how much longer will you have that right? With the present administration in Washington, D.C., and their “throw the baby out with the bath water” mentality, you don’t know what will be the next item on their chopping block.

Apparently, Obama and his administration do not understand the rights that are guaranteed in the Constitution that he has sworn to uphold, or perhaps he does and simply doesn’t care.

Why would any thinking adult want to associate or even support any person (or political party) whose main focus is to stifle the freedoms of the American people? I can tell you who, and they would agree by their own admission; in fact, they have. To name a few: Congressman Nick Rahall and Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin.

We must let our officials know that we will not stand idly by while they give away our rights, freedoms, and guns.
