Reader will be voting for no new taxes
I am fully supportive of funding for our Greenbrier County fire departments. Most of them are volunteers and donate many hours of their time to keep us safe. I realize that they face many mandates from the state regarding training, equipment and worker’s comp with little or no state funding to meet these mandates.
I am also a firm believer in no new taxes. In the coming year we are facing tax increases from Obamacare and probably from the “fiscal cliff” fiasco. We do not need to add to this by creating a new bureaucracy at the courthouse and raising our property taxes to pay for a fire coordinator.
New equipment is very expensive for our fire departments, but from what I have seen at parades across the county most departments appear to be fully equipped with relatively new equipment. It would seem that most of their expenses at this time would be training expenses and worker’s comp.
If our county commission can spend $1.3 million on a swimming pool, they should be able to find money somewhere to help our fire departments. When this item appears on the March ballot I will be voting for no new taxes.
