I just want to take an opportunity to say thank you to the Shady Spring High School cheerleaders for the work that they do each year collecting coats for Mac’s Toy Drive.
I’m not sure people realize what these girls do behind the scenes. In the weeks between Thanksgiving and Mac’s party, the girls get together and decorate signs and boxes which they deliver to four local schools and 12 area businesses. Then they have to periodically check those boxes and bag up the coats.
They spend several nights at the Family Coin Laundry in Beckley sorting, washing and hanging hundreds of coats and then spend several hours the night before the party delivering all of these coats to get ready for the next day.
This year they were at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center at 6:30 a.m. making sure everything was in order to give out hundreds of coats to needy families. They have also been able to get large donations from area business to help buy new coats.
I, personally, am proud to know such thoughtful and hard-working young ladies and want this area to know how lucky they are to have these girls as part of their community.
There are so many young people out there doing great things for their fellow neighbor. If you know of one, please tell them thank you. In this day of so much bad news and tragedy it is nice to hear about the good things people are doing to make the world a better place.
Thanks to all who donated coats and a big thank you to Family Coin Laundry for the free use of their washers and dryers every year.
May you all have a warm and Merry Christmas!
