Gay men and women deserve equal rights
My name is Christopher Burroughs. I am a member of the Shady Spring community. Over the past couple of months I have read several letters to the editor regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage. I have been appalled at the fact that otherwise intelligent people, can be that stupid and ridiculous.
One individual complained about the professional basketball player publicly coming “out of the closet.” He asked why someone had to come out to the world that they were gay? The answer to that is simply that he is a public, famous figure. Why is everything else public figures and famous people do and say so closely watched and monitored? Another man talked about the sin of homosexuality along with some other aspects that I disagreed with. Maybe it is a sin, maybe its not. My question is didn’t God say that everyone was loved the same and equal in his eyes?
How is it anyone’s right, whether it be a preacher, politician, or any other person to tell anyone who they can or cannot love or marry? Nobody says that marriage between a man and woman should be illegal. I ask everyone reading this; where do you stand? Gay rights will be and are the premier civil right issue of our time and history will judge everyone on how they stood on the issue. What side of history do you want to be on?
People who are homosexual are not ill or sick as one writer said so ignorantly in his letter. If you believe that it is an illness or sickness that can be changed by medicine or counseling or prayer, or whatever it is that you think could cure that so called illness, then your intelligence level cannot be very high at all. Every gay man and woman that I have ever met or talked with says they knew when they were small children before they even know what sexual attraction was or meant. They knew that they were attracted to the same sex as young as five years old. That’s before any child or person is of the age to understand what attraction and sexual attraction even meant. So explain to me how it is an illness?
I submit to you, gay men and women are born that way and by god they need to feel they are welcomed in society just like everyone else. They deserve to be treated the same as any straight person or other ethnicity, they deserve the same rights and privileges that every other American receives and deserves. My father always said to me when people felt like voicing their ignorance out loud, that everyone has an opinion; they are like brains, everybody has one, some are just more ignorant and ridiculous than others.
People like those who have voiced their ridiculous opinions which are totally absurd and unfounded, are the very people who give West Virginia the reputation of country, uneducated, back in time, backwoods, which is definitely not true at all. Its just that people like those give the rest of the citizens of this great state a bad reputation. Please folks, think for yourselves and again, ask yourself what side of history do you want to be on and what kind of person do you want to be at heart and then be who you are and what you want to be regardless of the ones who are ignorant enough to try and tell you differently.
