TWV an asset needed for future generations

Having spent the majority of my 27 years in southern West Virginia, there are many things that I hold very dear to my heart as part of my heritage and upbringing. One of which is the memories and experiences I have of Theatre West Virginia.

As a child I awaited the coming of the summer knowing that a on a few occasions throughout the season we would be treated to a day at Grandview Park and in the evening enjoying one of the wonderful productions of TWV. It is a tradition that had been passed down to me through my father. As a child he and his family found the same joy in going every summer to see the plays performed by Theatre West Virginia.

As a teenager I realized that I had developed a love for theater.

My senior year I enrolled in an acting class through Theatre West Virginia. It was the first class offered by the theatre’s Professional Training Academy. A decade later, hundreds of students have gone through the Professional Training Academy and gained skills and an appreciation for theatre.

Although my love for the arts did not lead me to acting, I did peruse a career in theater as I went off to college.

I attended West Virginia University and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2003 in technical theatre emphasizing on costuming and costume design.

After my time in Morgantown, I headed back home. Armed with a degree and quite a bit of experience I contacted Theatre West Virginia to see if there were any job opportunities for me there. They took me in instantly.

I worked two summers with Theatre West Virginia, first as a general costumer and my second as the costume shop manager.

I gained so much joy knowing I was costuming the plays that I had enjoyed my entire life. Aside from the professional fulfillment I experienced there, I also gained so much personal growth and experience.

I made friends that I am sure I will keep with me for a lifetime and learned lessons about my strengths and abilities.

Without the funding from the state it will be hard for Theatre West Virginia to meet it’s fullest potential.

I have grown up loving Theatre West Virginia and it is something I believe was instrumental in shaping my love for the arts.

Theatre West Virginia is an asset to this area and to this state.

We all need to do what we can to insure that other children and other families will have the opportunity I have had … the opportunity to grow up in an area with a great theatre and the opportunity to create memories and traditions that can be passed down for generations to come.
