Dan K. Thomasson’s editorial is wrong

I’m writing this in response to Dan K. Thomasson’s article on the July 1 editorial page. He starts his article berating Justice Scalia’s vote on the Washington, D.C., gun ban. Any way you look at it, the overturning of the gun ban will now give innocent people/victims of violence the option of defending themselves if they choose to do so.

Mr. Thomasson’s idea is more guns, more violence. How many times have we heard this nonsense? It’s the same thing that other talking heads with a liberal bias have said, “Blood will flow in the streets.” Statistically, this has always been proven wrong. When the general population has the option to be armed, crime in most categories has dropped and blood didn’t flow in the streets.

The next thing Mr. Thomasson has wrong is his reading of the Second Amendment. It seems that he thinks it’s a constraint on the people from bearing arms. In fact, the Bill Of Rights — that’s the first 10 amendments — puts the constraint on the government, not the people.

Mr. Thomasson even brings up the issue of automatic weapons. The way his article reads, he’s under the assumption that no one can own select fire weapons. I have news for him, there are many states, including this one, that allow the ownership of select fire weapons (that’s full auto for those who don’t understand).

Now I’m going to assume something. Mr. Thomasson has probably never even shot a BB gun, but that’s his loss.

What part of state will be sacrificed next?

In regard to (Rep. Nick) Rahall’s comments about liquid coal technology, I have a few questions.

What part of West Virginia is going to be sacrificed next? No matter where we live in Boone County, we live around these coal reserves. We have water that is contaminated with cancer-causing carcinogens and there are no plans to get healthy drinking water or adequate health care. This is a cost we shouldn’t have to pay when coal contaminated the perfect water we had.

We live in communities that are often homeplaces that have been passed down to family members for many generations. Are we even considered in your plans to secure the nation? What about our security? Our forefathers inherited this land, in some cases by fighting in wars that gave us the freedoms we have today. They intended on securing our future by passing the land that sustained their families on to the people who now live here.

We should tally the true cost of liquid coal on the state of West Virginia. It only looks cheap because no one considers the cost for people who live on it. Champ in Alaska, chump in West Virginia. We don’t need liquid coal. We need a complete overhaul of our state politicians.
