Let’s help older people, not young freeloaders

I was absolutely stunned when I read the story on the front page of the April 28 Register-Herald.

I’m talking about the story of the 85-year-old woman who had to go to work because she couldn’t afford to have her heat on.

What a shame and disgrace it is to think our elderly have to get out and find a job while so many young people sit back on welfare and don’t have to worry about heat or water. Most of them even get their grass mowed for free.

The welfare department needs to get rid of hand-outs for most young people who are able to work and give a few hand-outs to the older generation. Make these young people get out and find a job and pay for these freebies they are getting. Make them pay for their babies as I did.

Where’s Beckley? Is it not in West Virginia?

I wrote an article before about gas prices in Beckley, but The Register-Herald did not print it. This newspaper on April 29 had the highest gas prices in the state in Charleston. Well, I’ve been back here 38 years and I thought Beckley was in West Virginia, or could it be a little state of its own? Gasoline was $3.79 in Beckley on April 26 on Harper Road. Now the rest of the stations went to $3.75. Seems to me that beats the price in Charleston by six cents, but what’s the surprise? Everyone knows Beckley has the highest prices on everything, so remember, tourists, buy your food and gas before you get into the big state of Beckley or you will pay for sure.

States, Congress should slow gas prices

There are solutions for the high cost of oil/gas prices. No, it’s not the tax break from the revenues of the fuel on the national level. That’s a silly idea by desperate politicians that sounds good, but in the long run will hurt America in needed tax revenues.

The states themselves should go first. Our state alone gets somewhere around 49.9 cents on gas and 55.9 on diesel. If that was cut in half, think of the savings and the surrounding states coming here for a chance to fill up. Yet why hasn’t that been addressed or explored?

Congress needs to just put a freeze on the prices. I wonder why they haven’t yet? They have before on other things. Dumb ol’ taxpayer like me thinks they may be profiting from it in some way.

How do the gas stations put a higher price on the gas? I have seen it jump in prices two and three times on the same load of gas they get. Then to add insult to our intelligence, they cover the pumps of low and mid test just to sell the high test gas. Where are the people to monitor this gouging?

There are other ways too to be looked at, like a good discount from Kuwait. Remember the Gulf War, congressional leaders? How about our own vast oil reserves in storage and millions just waiting to be drilled? If not that, then just put a freeze on the prices, Congress, and if not, please explain it to me why not.
