Sprint cars make return tonight at race track

BECKLEY — You won’t see a Sprint car at a NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

Fans of dirt track racing probably could care less.

Those funny-looking Sprint cars can flat-out fly!

“We’ve got them coming in (tonight),” Beckley Motorsports Park manager Joe Jackson said. “They set the track record here. They’re fast.”

It’s no secret that fans at the Prosperity track love the Late Models racing class. The cars are the biggest that normally run at the 3/8th-mile, banked oval.

However, they’ve got nothing for the Sprints, which have wings and track-hugging ability in addition to their powerful motors.

Back in 2010 one completed a lap in 11.6 seconds. The previous fastest time at BMP was 12.96 seconds by a Late Model.

Jackson expects a bigger field of Sprints this time, possibly 20.

“There were only eight or nine of them last time,” he said. “This series has a good following of cars.”

All systems are go, as Mother Nature has hopefully ended two weeks of rain.

“The weather looks great for tomorrow night,” Jackson said. “There’s zero chance of rain, and it will be a little bit cooler than our hot summer nights. It should be good for the cars, and good for the fans.”

Last week’s races were rained out, so both the Kids’ Box Car race and the holiday fireworks will be held tonight at intermission.

The track will host most of its other classes, in addition to the Sprints.

Jackson called the track “beautiful.”

“We graded it Monday, and we dragged it again a little while ago,” he said. “It looks fabulous. It’s still moist from the rain and we’ll add a little more water (today). It should be super fast.”

Gates will open at 4 p.m., with racing to begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $15. Kids ages 6-10 will pay $6, while those 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $30.
