Friday night’s game at Woodrow Wilson’s Van Meter Stadium had it all — flags, whistles, punches, pushes, ejections and plenty of yellow flags and screaming. And in between the yellow laundry, there was plenty of offense.
Woodrow Wilson (1-1) scored 46 points in the second and third quarters and racked up 453 yards of total offense to erase a season opening loss to Winfield with a 52-35 pounding of rival Greenbrier East.
Down 7-0 after Greenbrier East went 93 yards in nine plays to open the game, the Flying Eagles converted a fourth-and-goal from the Spartan 12-yard line to get on the scoreboard, when junior quarterback Brent Osborne found senior Chase Hancock for a touchdown, and they never looked back.
A safety — when Troy Lilly tackled East running back Dalton Cline in the end zone — gave Woodrow its first lead, and they found the end zone twice more before the half to take a 24-13 advantage into the locker room, despite a 185-121 advantage for the Spartans in total yardage.
East was its own worst enemy all game, approaching 250 yards in penalties, and one critical flag just before halftime turned the tide of the game.
Down 24-13 but knocking on the door for another score, the Spartans went from a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line to a first-and-goal at the 35 thanks to a personal foul. That drive ended in a Donte Nabors interception of Isaiah Kinder, and the Flying Eagles took all the momentum into the third quarter.
It was all Woodrow after that, as the Flying Eagles scored the first two touchdowns of the second half on a 1-yard Osborne run and a 33-yard pass from Osborne to Nabors, and East could never climb out of the hole.
Osborne ended the game with 252 passing yards and four touchdowns. Two of those went to his best friend, Nabors, who ended the game with 137 yards on seven catches.
“It’s special to have him out there,” said Osborne, who was on Woodrow’s state tournament basketball and baseball teams with Nabors, as well. “We’re clicking out there. You’ll see us out in public together 24/7.”
Hancock had a huge all-around game, as well. He recorded an interception on defense, rushed for 92 yards on eight carries and caught five passes for 95 yards.
“I couldn’t have made plays without my teammates,” he said. “But I’m a senior now and this was my last game against East. I wasn’t going out with a loss. It felt good.”
Troy Lilly rushed for 94 yards on nine carries and was all over the field on defense, including the critical safety.
Greenbrier East had plenty of offense of its own. Kinder threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, despite three interceptions. Kamen Reynolds caught six passes for 143 yards, and Colby Johnson caught five for 105.
Dalton Cline rushed for 71 yards on 20 carries, and the Spartans ended the game with 482 yards of total offense. But the night was defined by penalties and mistakes for the undisciplined East squad.
“I think they hurt themselves a whole bunch,” said Osborne. “That was the bottom line, really.”
Greenbrier East (1-1) will head back to Raleigh County for a matchup with Shady Spring next Friday. Woodrow will be at home against Huntington.
