COAL CITY — The Independence Lady Patriots rallied from down 6-0 with seven runs in the top of the fifth and two more in the seventh to knock off top-seeded Liberty 9-7 in the Class AA Region 3, Section 1 tournament Monday.

Katie Lilly blasted three doubles and drove in two runs, while Jessie Lilly had a double and also drove in two runs for the Lady Patriots.

Kelsey Hart added two hits and one RBI for Independence.

Brianna Haney hit a home run for the Lady Raiders and Kaitlyn Hannah and Morgan Drennen had two hits apiece.

Liberty plays Summers County today and the winner advances to the championship round against Independence in the double-elimination format.

Brooke Foley surrendered just two hits and Elizabeth Epling smacked a double and had three RBIs to lead Independence past Summers County in the opening game of Class AA Region 3, Section 1 play Monday.

Katie Lilly and Jessie Lilly each added a double and drove in two runs for the Lady Patriots, while Courtney Haga added a double and an RBI.

Independence advanced in the winners bracket to play Liberty in the nightcap.

Westside 4-2, Wyoming East 1-3

CLEAR FORK — Rivals Westside and Wyoming East split the first two games of the Class AA Region 3, Section 2 tournament.

In the first game, Leah Pack homered twice and drove in three runs as Westside won 4-1.

In the second, Chelsea Adkins’ two-run homer in the seventh forced extra innings, then Wyoming East scored a run in the ninth to win 3-2.

The decisive game will be played at 5:30 p.m. today at Westside.
