Coalfield awards to be presented today

Nearly 60 athletes and coaches will be honored today at the 20th annual Coalfield Conference Impact Awards ceremony at Tamarack. The event will start at 6 p.m.

Awards will be given to the male and female athletes of the year from each of the conference’s 20 schools. That will be followed by Coach of the Year awards in 36 sports, from golf in fall all the way to baseball in spring.

After that, the Impact Athlete of the Year awards will be presented to a male and female athlete at the Class A and AA levels.

Radio personality Fred Persinger will be the emcee for the evening.

Commissioner Rick Vass said there were several $100 donations made to cover the cost of the event’s programs.

Vass added it is important to recognize athletes and coaches for their accomplishments.

“The kids, the coaches, the athletic directors, the principals — the whole nine yards,” he said. “They have all come to expect it. It’s one of the ways to show our appreciation for the coaches, the ADs, the administrators and the athletes as well.”
