Spots still available for BNI Memorial Golf Classic

When the champion is crowned after the final hole of The Greenbrier Classic on Sunday afternoon, it doesn’t mean that the gentleman’s game’s time in West Virginia is drawing to a close. It’s only heating up.

The BNI Memorial Golf Classic will kick off Saturday, July 13, and continue through Monday, July 15.

“We’re real excited for the tournament this year,” tournament director David Hunter said. “We’ve had a very good turnout.”

While the turnout has been great, Hunter said there’s still room for more.

“We’ve had 20 or so golfers sign up this week and there are still some spots remaining,” he added.

The 2013 event will honor 1985 BNI champion Andy Holland, who passed away in May 2011 following a short battle with cancer.

Holland also won the West Virginia Senior Amateur Championship Silver Division in 2009 and 2010. On top of being an avid golfer, Holland also served as a boys and girls basketball coach at Trap Hill and Liberty high schools. He eventually relocated to Texas before returning home to Beckley, where he spent his final years hitting the irons on the Cobb Course at Glade Springs — the course that will host the championship for the BNI.

The BNI is one of the largest amateur tournaments in the state, annually hosting over 150 golfers. Golfers will start at either The Brier Patch Golf Links or Grandview Country Club on July 13, playing the opposite course on July 14. Champions in multiple flights will be crowned on July 15 at Glade Springs.

“We have over $5,000 worth of prizes this year to give away,” Hunter said. “All provided by The Resort at Glade Springs.”

The champion will leave the resort with a $750 Glade Springs gift certificate, and winners in each flight will take home a BNI Championship golf shirt.

“These shirts are really, really nice,” Hunter added.

The event, in its 33rd year, will crown a new champion in 2013. The 2012 winner, Bosten Miller, a former Thundering Herd golfer, will not be attending due to a prior engagement.

“It’s a chance for us to crown a brand new BNI champion,” said Hunter.

Limited openings to participate in the event remain, but are filling quickly. Interested golfers should contact Hunter at 304-640-8660 or by e-mail at golf@register-herald.com.
