Building our own Mount Rushmore

BECKLEY — Our Mount Rushmore of West Virginia sports that ran in Thursday’s Register-Herald in honor of West Virginia’s 150th birthday brought about a great deal of discussion — not only from readers, but also among the sports staff at The Register-Herald.

Being in our new temporary close quarters at Van Dyke Hall at the University of Charleston-Beckley, we’ve had more than ample opportunity to discuss the faces that most represent sports in the Mountain State and argue our selections against those of our co-workers.

Those conversations have also sparked a number of offsprings, and the lightbulb suddenly illuminated.

Over the next few weeks, our sports staff is going to come up with a Mount Rushmore for each of our area high schools, identifying the four faces that best represent the tradition and pride of each school.

We know full well that such a list is going to ignite some debate, and that’s exactly what we’re hoping to achieve. We intend to put time and effort into making our lists as strong as possible, but we also hope it will inspire our readers to come up with their own lists for their favorite schools.

We’re also asking for readers’ help in advance.

We’re confident that there are fans out there who know the history of the area high schools even better than we do, and we’re asking for nominations for any player, coach, administrator or supporter who belongs on one of our lists.

E-mail your nominations to me at chuffman@register-herald.com, send us a tweet at @Register_Herald or leave a message on our Facebook page at The Register-Herald (Official). Anybody is eligible, as long as he or she has a connection to an area high school.

We’d love to have as much information as possible — statistics, awards won, etc. — but if all you have is a name, we’ll be glad to have that, too. The nominations will give us a place to start and hopefully prevent us from overlooking a worthy candidate.

Let the debate begin.
